Body length 10.8 cm, body weight 7–13 g. Females are slightly larger than males. The color of the fur is rusty brown, white spots on the shoulders. 5.8 mm long hair at the end of the old. The belly is slightly lighter than the back. The ears are wide and round. The wings are quite long and narrow.

The red hairtail is active at night, the search for food begins 1-2 hours after sunset. It hunts, as a rule, for flying insects, as well as for cicadas, beetles and crickets.

He leads a solitary lifestyle, hiding during the day on trees and bushes at an altitude of 1.1-6.2 meters. Shelters are usually located on the shady side. In winter and spring they migrate returning to breeding sites at the end of October.

Reproduction occurs in the fall. After 80–90 days of the gestation period, females give birth to 1–5 blind, without a coat of cubs weighing 0.5 g. After 3-4 weeks, their eyes open. The fur by this time is still quite short, in dense, the cubs already weigh 4-5 g. At the age of 6 months they become independent.

The species is common in the United States east of the Rockies to the north of Mexico.
