History
Under the Han Empire, Zhenyang (滇 阳县) County was created, so named because it was located on the northern ("Yang") side of the Zhenhe River. In the era of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, the first character of the county name began to be written without the key “water”, and the spelling of the county name began to look like 真 阳县. Under the Sui Empire, the county was renamed Zhenqiu (真 丘 县). Under the Tang Empire, the county was first renamed Huaiyang (淮阳 县), and then again called Zhenyang (真 阳县).
Under the Qing Empire in 1723, due to the practice of taboo on names due to the fact that the character "zhen" was read in the same way as the character included in the personal name of the ascending emperor Aishingjoro Yinzhen , the character "zhen" in the county name was replaced by "zheng."
In 1949, the Xinyang Special Region (信阳 专区) was created, and the county became part of it. In 1965, the Zhumadian Special District (驻马店 专区) was allocated from the Xinyang Special Region. In 1969, the Zhumadian Special District was renamed Zhumadian (驻马店 地区).
By the Decree of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China of June 8, 2000, Zhumadyan District and Zhumadian City County were disbanded, and Zhumadian City District was formed.
Administrative Division
The county is divided into 8 villages and 11 volosts .
