The square houses the former city palace of Nassau , the Old Town Hall (built in 1608–1610, now it houses the registry office), the New Town Hall (built in 1905) and the Protestant Market Church (built in 1853–1862, has five towers) as well as a number of other historic buildings; some of them were seriously affected by the bombing during World War II , some were destroyed (for example, the female gymnasium). In the center of the square is the Market Square Fountain, erected in 1753. Sometimes the entire area is called Market (German Marktplatz ), although this is the name of a small part, passing into Marktstrasse street. During the ten days of August each year, a wine festival takes place in the Rheingau region; other festivals and various political events are often held here.
