Biography
The third son of Francis of Lorraine (1519-1563), the Duke de Guise (1550-1563), and Anna d'Este (1531-1607), the younger brother and associate of the Duke Heinrich de Guise . On the maternal side, his grandfather and grandmother were Ercole II d'Este , Duke of Ferrara, and Rene French (daughter of King Louis XII of France).
In 1574, Louis of Lorraine was elected Archbishop of Reims, replacing his uncle Charles de Guise . In the same year he became abbot of Saint-Denis . February 21, 1578 he received the rank of cardinal . He took the title of Cardinal de Guise, replacing his other uncle in this post - Cardinal Louis de Guise . He later became a papal legate in Avignon and a knight of the Order of the Holy Spirit .
His dedication to the cause of his elder brother, the Duke Heinrich the Sword , the leader of the Catholic League , and his intransigence to the royal power provoked the hostility of the French king Henry III of Valois . By royal order, Cardinal Louis de Guise was killed in 1588 by royal bodyguards in the castle of Blois , the day after the death of his older brother Heinrich.
He had an illegitimate son, Louis Bastard de Guise (1588-1631), who was born from a relationship with Emery de Lesher, the lady of Grimocour, was legalized in 1610 .
