Azerbaijanis are the 10th largest people in Kyrgyzstan according to the 2009 census .
According to estimates as of January 1, 2012, over 18 thousand Azerbaijanis, who make up about 0.3% of the republic’s population, lived in the republic.
In the second half of the 20th century, despite some wave-like fluctuations in the 1990s, their number, share and rank in the rating of the largest ethnic groups of the republic increased significantly, mainly due to the high natural growth among the Azerbaijanis-villagers. Despite a significant increase in the share of citizens among Azerbaijanis of the republic (from 12.3% in 1959 to 33.8% in 2009), most of them continue to live in villages of Chui and Osh regions. Moreover, it is in the Chui region that their presence is most noticeable: over 10 thousand Azerbaijanis live here, and their share reaches 1.3%.
In contrast to the Azerbaijani diaspora of Kazakhstan , which has a very heterogeneous origin, almost all Azerbaijanis of Kyrgyzstan are descendants of Azerbaijanis deported to Kyrgyzstan from Transcaucasia in the 1940s [1] .
Azerbaijanis of the republic are multilingual: over 91% of their number speak at least two languages ( 1999 census ). According to this indicator, they are second only to the Dungans . Due to overpopulation and lack of land, Azerbaijanis in the republics have already become victims of interethnic conflicts [2] .
