Russian Language Machine Fund

The Russian Language Machine Fund is a project to create a large representative corpus of the Russian language. The experience of the IFRN has been used in the development, starting in 2004, of the National Russian Language Corps .

IFDF Program

The Department of the Russian Language Machine Fund was created in 1985 on the initiative of Academician A. P. Ershov after a special all-Union conference held in 1983 [1] Under the direction of corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Yu. N. Karaulov , a “Comprehensive Program” was developed scientific research and applied research to create the Russian Language Machine Fund for 1996-2000 and research informatization. "

The creation of the Russian Language Machine Fund (1986-1990) was attended by more than 40 partner organizations, including Moscow , Leningrad , Kharkov , Grodno , Syktyvkar and Saratov universities.

Under the comprehensive informatization of scientific research and applied development in Russian studies was understood:

  • Sequentially equipping the departments of the Russian Language Institute and co-executing organizations with modern computers with the prospect of combining them into a local network (not completed)
  • Sequential accumulation on machine carriers and in databases of the most important sources necessary both for the scientific study of the Russian language and for the implementation of applied developments (partially completed)
  • Creation of software tools necessary both for the preparation of scientific works on philology and for application development (2 programs for MS DOS were developed and several dictionaries were translated into electronic form);
  • The development of applied areas (lexicography, terminology, automatic processing of natural language data) as an integral part of academic Russian studies, which, on the one hand, are the conductor of the results of basic research into practice, and on the other, a source of new ideas and data for basic science (the program has not been implemented )

Program Implementation (1985-1992)

Over 8 years of work as a department of the Russian Language Machine Fund (partially with the participation of co-executors), the following were carried out:

  • Development of the concept and architecture of the Russian Language Machine Fund [2] .
  • Development of the concept of a terminological data bank [3]
  • Accumulation of a significant number of sources — textual sources of Russian literature of the 19th – 20th centuries, the most important dictionaries of the Russian language, Brief academic grammar, some other reference materials, textual corpses of poetry, fiction, and sociopolitical have been accumulated on machine carriers and partially in databases and technical texts [4]
  • Development of two programs running MS DOS :
- UNILEX-T for the manufacture of frequency dictionaries, word indexes (word indices for texts) and concordances and work with the latter [5]
- UNILEX-D for creating dictionary databases and working with the latter. [6]
  • Development of source software packages (their development was stopped), for example:

Activities of the Department of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Language (1992-1998)

Full-scale testing of UNILEX linguistic data processing systems by participating in the preparation of the Spelling Dictionary and the 20th Century Poetry Dictionary.

Accelerated accumulation of new sources based on electronic newspapers and scanning works of Russian classical literature. A complete archive of sources of the Russian Language Machine Fund now amounts to more than 100 million word usage;

Work on the dictionary of the language of F. M. Dostoevsky [8] .

Accumulation of sources for the purpose of a wide distribution and statistical study of Russian prose in the last third of the 19th century. and newspapers of the late XX century.

Accumulation and analysis of distribution and statistical data, preparation of publications of summary data [9] .

Analysis of the development activities of the Russian language MF

The concept of development of the Russian language faculty (1983)

  • creation of components of linguistic support for computer science tasks and
  • informatization of scientific research in Russian studies.

Modern challenges of creating IFRP

  • distribution and statistical analysis and accumulation of linguistic resources on the Internet
  • accumulation of sources on the Foundation’s websites
  • further development of the functions of the Fund's automatic dictionary files
  • designing global linguistic-statistical processing of all textual sources of the Foundation in an interactive mode [10] .
