Creation History
As a basis, Brecht took the work of the ancient Roman historian Titus Livius, who spoke about the war between the cities of Rome and Albalonga. Both cities put up three warriors - three Horats and three Curiazies. Two Horaties were killed, two Curiazis were wounded. On the third Horace, Titus Livy wrote: “Fortunately, he was not yet injured, and, not being able to cope with one of three at once, he was, however, stronger than each individually. In order to dismember the struggle with them, he took flight in the expectation that they would pursue him in the way that everyone wounds his weakening. He disconnects the enemies in this way, then turns and kills them one by one, first the strongest, then both weakened. "
In 1958, the play was staged in Halle at the Young Guard Theater by the Musicology Institute at Martin Luther University.
