History
In 1799, a metallurgical plant was built at the Habsburgs in Kujir.
In 1920, the Austrian society STEG ( German Österreichische Staats Eisenbahn Geseellschafts ) negotiated with the Romanian government on the establishment of the "Plants and Lands of Resita" ( Roman Uzinele şi Domeniile Reşiţa , UDR). On March 21, 1925, an agreement was signed in Paris on the establishment of the Copşa Mică-Cugir (SMS) company, between Romania, represented by the Minister of Commerce and Industry, the English company Vickers Armstrong represented by President Douglas Vickers and the UDR society represented by Adalbert Weydta (Adalbert Veidt) [2] . After that, in 1926, the plant expanded, new workshops were built, the plant began production of parts and components of artillery systems [3] . In 1928, the construction of the new Kujir plant, in which 600 million lei was invested, was almost completed [4] .
In 1934, the SMS company began cooperation with the Czechoslovak company Zbrojovka Brno , and the Kujir factory refocused on the production of small arms ( Mauser rifles and light machine guns ZB vz. 30 [5] ) and ammunition ( 7.92 mm cartridges). The very next year, 1935, the plant received the first large order from the Romanian government for the production of 5000 machine guns and 90 million rounds [6] .
On December 15, 1937, the factory held a meeting of incarnates of King Karol II and his 15-year-old son, Crown Prince Mihai, who arrived there with Chairman of the Board General Samsonovichi and Director Christescu. [7] .
In 1939, control over Zbrojovka Brno was acquired by the German concern German Goering Werke [8] , which thus became a co-owner of the Kujir plant [3] . In 1940–41, the production of the first model of small arms of the Romanian design, the 9-mm Orita submachine gun [3] [9], began .
After the war, the plant switched to the production of mainly copies of Soviet weapons [10]
The civilian product range was mainly represented by sewing and washing machines. Among the brands that have gained fame are the Automatic and Automatic Super (produced at that time 4,800 lei) produced since 1980; Diamant 400 and 550t (1994), Albalux (since 2008). [11] [12] [13]
After the revolution of 1989 , the plant had to go through a number of economic problems, as a result of which the number of employees decreased from 18,000 people in 1989 to about 1,000 in 2008 [1] .
In 2004, the “Kujir Arms Factory” (Fabrica de Arme Cugir) was separated from UM Cugir, which began the production of small arms (some models are produced at both plants), while the Mechanical Plant left the production of ammunition, heavy machine guns and automatic guns [ 14] .
