Description
The bird reaches a length of 32 cm. The upper part of the body is brownish-gray in color with black spots. The belly is ocher yellow. The beak is thin and curved. Beak and legs are yellow or gray.
Habitat and habitat
The species is common in southern and central Peru , southwestern Bolivia , northern Chile and northwestern Argentina. The species is found in alpine meadows at an altitude of 3450–4700 meters above sea level [3] . It feeds mainly on fruits and berries. In small quantities it eats invertebrates, flowers, seeds.
Reproduction
The male incubates the eggs. In one clutch there can be eggs from 4 females. Nests are placed on the ground. Hatching lasts 2-3 weeks [4] .
Subspecies
- Nothoprocta ornata ornata is common in southern and central Peru, southwestern Bolivia, in northern Chile;
- Nothoprocta ornata branickii central Peru;
- Nothoprocta ornata rostrata north argentina.
