Biography

Anna Mowbray was only three years old when her father died. As the only representative of the clan, the heiress of vast lands and numerous titles, she became one of the most enviable brides of the kingdom. Already in 1478, Edward IV married her the second of his sons - Richard of Shrusbury . The bride was six years old, the groom - incomplete five; even for that time it was an unusual marriage, but the king needed it for strong control over the possessions of one of the most powerful families in England. The young husband of Anna became Lord Marshal and Duke of Norfolk, but on November 19, 1481, the Duchess died. With her, the Mowbray family died out.

The body of Anna Mowbray was buried in the chapel of St. Erasmus in Westminster Abbey . In 1502, in connection with the restructuring of the abbey, the sarcophagus was moved, and then forgot about it. The remains of the last of the Mowbray clan were accidentally found in 1964, investigated and reburied.

The problem of inheritance

After the death of the young duchess, two female descendants of Mowbray, John Howard and William Berkeley, claimed the inheritance. But the king through parliament decided that the heir to the Dukes of Norfolk should be his son Richard, and in the absence of his offspring - other descendants of Edward [1] . As a result, Howard supported Richard III , who, after his accession, gave him the Mowbray titles and half of their possessions.
