Biography

John's father was convicted by Richard II and died in exile [2] ; as a result, Mowbray lost the ducal title, and John's elder brother Thomas became only Earl of Norfolk. He also clashed with the crown and in 1405, at the age of only 20, he was beheaded for participating in another rebellion. John became the heir to his brother [3] .

In 1415, John Mowbray took part in the trial of the participants in the Southampton conspiracy , who planned to kill King Henry V in preparation for the French campaign. As a result, conspirators led by Richard Conisburg were executed. Then John landed in Normandy as part of the English army and participated in the siege of Arfleur, but did not fight at Agincourt because of his illness.

In 1425, the Earl for his faithful service received from the regents who ruled for the young Henry VI , the title of Duke of Norfolk, which once belonged to his father.

John Mowbray died on October 19, 1432 at Epworth in North Lincolnshire and was buried in the clan tomb of Mowbray.

Family

John Mowbray was married to Katherine Neville, the daughter of Ralph Neville, 1st Earl of Westmoreland , and Joanna Beaufort. In this marriage, only one son was born - John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk (1415 - 1461), who became the only heir to his father.
