Biography

He received his theater education first in his native city of Chernivtsi in a children's theater under the guidance of Honored Artist of Ukraine V.V. Bespoletova.

In 1969 he entered the directorial and acting course of the Leningrad State Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography in the workshop of A. A. Muzil . After graduation, he leaves for three years to work as a director in the Vologda Regional Drama Theater .

In 1978 he emigrated to the United States. His American debut took place in 1979 with the production of N.V. Gogol ’s play “ Marriage ” at the Lexington Conservatory Theater . In the same year, he begins to teach acting and directing at the New York Stanislavski Studio Of The Theater, a popular theater school run by E.B. Vakhtangov’s student Sonya Moore. Shekhtman's New York directorial debut took place in 1980 with the production of A. Tetenbaum's play “Heat of Re-Entry” (“Combustion in the Upper Atmosphere”) at the famous Playwrights Horizons Theater. In the same year, Lev Shekhtman and his students opened in New York the professional repertoire theater Theater In Action, which was directed until 1990. At the theater, a drama studio also begins to function, where he teaches acting and directing. The theater’s repertoire includes plays by Chekhov and Tennessee Williams , Camus and Jack London , Gogol and Berthold Brecht , Moliere and the contemporary American playwright Michael McGuire and many others. Especially popular with the audience was the staging of the play by Grigory Gorin "The House that Swift Built", whose American premiere took place in 1986 in the presence of the author. [1] Lev Shekhtman’s track record has collaborated with many renowned New York theaters such as the Manhattan Theater Club , The Public Theater , The American Place Theater and McArthur Theater ( Princeton , NJ ).

Since 1986, Lev Shulimovich has starred in films of the famous Polish film and television director, Oscar winner, Zbigniew Rybczynski for the next seven years. The television film "Orchestra", in which he plays the main role, received in 1990 the television award " Emmy " in the category "Best Short Film". Lev Shekhtman also starred in the film directed by Jennifer Montgomery "Troika" ("Troika"), where he played Vladimir Zhirinovsky . [2] His last works in the cinema are one of the main ones - the role of Vladimir in the film “Indocumentados” (“Without Documents”) and KGB −1 (KGB-1) in the film “The Life Experience” (“Life Experience”). He also played the role of Kronks-Mikhailov in the Russian television series Citizen Head-2

From 1995 to 2000, Lev Shekhtman worked in the American broadcasting company WMNB, broadcasting in Russian, as the author and presenter of several television and radio programs. He also worked as an editor and director of the daily television news program.

In 2006, he made his debut at the State St. Petersburg Youth Theater on the Fontanka with the production of the play “Blue Roses” based on Tennessee Williams 's play “The Glass Menagerie ”. [3] [4]

In 2008, in the same theater, in its production and re-enactment, the play “Job” is based on the novel of the same name by the famous Austrian writer Joseph Roth . [2] [5]

In 2012, at the State St. Petersburg Youth Theater on the Fontanka, staged and staged by L. Shekhtman, the play “ABANAMAT!” Based on the work of Sergei Dovlatov “Ours” is released. [6]

In 2014, Shekhtman staged Antigone in the Vladimir Regional Academic Theater, Russia, based on the play by Jean Anouillet, and in 2017 in the same theater, Love Under the Elms, by Eugene O'Neill.

In 2017, Lev Shekhtman, together with producer Mikhail Galkin, becomes a co-founder of the Theater of Russian Actors (TRACT) in New York, USA. In the same year, he staged a world premiere based on the play by Eduard Reznik “Raskolnikov and the Percentage Woman. Love story ”satire based on“ Crime and Punishment ”by F. Dostoevsky and in 2018“ Equation with Two Unknowns ”, stage version of Lev Shekhtman based on the works of Jean Cocteau and August Strindberg. [7]
