Four -point attack or four-point play - the situation in basketball, when the attacking player successfully implements a three-point throw , becomes a victim of a violation of the rules by the opponent and implements one free throw , earning four points at a time. In the event of a successful four-point attack, the team is immediately awarded 4 points within one period of possession of the ball. Also, a four- point attack is equated with a similar two-point shot with two free throws implemented [1] .
The rule was first introduced by the American Basketball League , and then adopted by the American Basketball Association in the very first season [2] . A similar rule was approved in the NBA in 1979, FIBA in 1984, the NCAA in 1986 and 1987 (for men and women, respectively), in secondary schools and colleges the rule has been in force since 1987, in the Women's NBA - since 1997.
The first to launch a four-pointer attack was Sam Smith from the Chicago Bulls in a duel October 21, 1979 against the Milwaukee Bucks [3] . As of November 18, 2016, the record holder for such attacks is Jamal Crawford with 55 successful four-point attacks in the regular season (60 taking into account the playoffs) [4] [5] .
