Hydronym

It is named for the nearby Mount Arenai , which is translated from Chukot. means "a mountain with blocks similar to hummocks " [1] .

Hydrography

The lagoon was formed on a mountainous coastline with a rugged coastline during flooding of the trough valleys and tectonic depressions during the postglacial transgression and subsequently discharged from the sea in bulk [2] . It is an elongated lake in the north-west direction with a length of 8.5 km, a width of 1.5 km and a maximum depth of 27 m. It is separated from the sea by a narrow pebble spit . The reservoir is connected by the Svyaznoy canal with the neighboring lagoon, along which there is a constant flow of water from Arina. A feature of this phenomenon is that Arinay is practically not fed by streams.

The lagoon freezes at the end of October, is completely cleared of ice in late June - early July. The average water temperature in summer is 10 Β° C, while the temperature on the surface and at the maximum depth is the same, which indicates the absence of a thermocline and high convection activity.

Ichthyofauna

In the waters of the lagoon live: pink salmon, sockeye salmon, char, whitefish, star flounder, also in small quantities of malm, chum, chinook salmon, Asian smelt.

Man-made impact

In the Arinay lagoon, it is planned to build a deepwater port for transporting coal from the nearby Amaam coal deposit [3] , which, according to scientists, will lead to the complete destruction of the reservoir ecosystem [4] .
