Kazis Alexandras Puida ( lit. Kazys Aleksandras Puida ; March 19, 1883 , Shetiai of the Suwalki province , now in the Sakiai region - January 24, 1945 , Nausedai near Kaunas ) - Lithuanian poet, prose writer, playwright, translator.

Biography

Born in the village of Shetiyai near the contingent city of Shaki, Suwalk province. He graduated from high school in Marijampole , then the Polytechnic Institute in Berlin ( 1904 ). In 1905 - 1907 he worked in the editorial office of the newspaper " Vilniaus žinios" [2] . Participated in the activities of Lithuanian organizations. In 1906 he married writer, journalist, social activist Ona Pleirite, in marriage Puiden [3] . In 1907 - 1912 he taught Lithuanian at the gymnasium in Shavly .

Due to persecution by the authorities, he went to Chelyabinsk with his wife, where in 1912 - 1916 he taught German [2] , according to other sources - mathematics . During the First World War he ended up in Petrograd , where in 1916 he was drafted into the army. In Siberia he fell into disfavor with the White Guards; he was threatened with death, but was saved by the efforts of his wife [3] .

Upon his return to Lithuania ( 1920 ) he worked in the publishing house “Švyturis”, in the printing house “Spindulis”. In 1922, he founded the Vaiva publishing house, which produced a series of literary classics, edited and published the literary magazines Gayres ( Gairės ; 1923 - 1924 ), Krivule ( Krivulė ; 1923 - 1925 ), "Gaisai" ( "Gaisai" ; 1930 - 1931 ).

In 1937 he settled in the village of Nausedai near Kaunas , where he died on January 24, 1945 . He was buried in Panevezhyukas .

Creativity

He made his debut with poems (collection “Iš sermėgiaus krūtinės” , 1906 ; under the pseudonym Žegota ). He published a collection of short stories , Autumn ( Ruduo , 1906 ).

He was very productive and became one of the first Lithuanian professional writers. Already in 1911 - 1912 he published a collection of works in 4 volumes, between 1911 and 1913 - three collections of articles on literary and pedagogical topics.

He has published over fifty translation books by G. Suderman , O. Wilde , G. Ibsen , G. Senkevich , S. Lagerlöf , Mine Reed , Jack London and other West European and American authors.

He is the author of the novels “A Song of the Earth” ( Žemės giesmė “ , 1911 ),“ The Red Rooster ”( “ Raudonas gaidys ” , 1929 ) and others, the science fiction novel “ Iron Wolf ”( “ Geležinis vilkas ” , 1927 ), historical works themes are the legends of Karalius Haraldas ( 1920 ), the novels Vaidevutis ir Brutenis ( 1923 ), the novel Magnus Dux ( 1936 ).

Author of the plays Mirga (1912), Mermaid ( Undinė , 1912) and others. In drama, he tried to use the achievements of M. Meterlink and A.P. Chekhov , without avoiding allegorical rhetoric and fragmentation. In prose and dramaturgy, elements of impressionism and symbolism , quotes from F. Nietzsche were combined with the tradition of realism . In the play “Gairės” ( 1913 ), the Ibsenian generational conflict is based on the realities of the Lithuanian countryside. The most mature is the drama "Steppe" ( "Stepai" , 1920 ).
