Biography
Elizabeth Murray was born in Chicago in 1940 , and her childhood was disturbing; there were even episodes of homelessness due to father's illness.
Aesthetic sensitivity awoke in her early. Recalling the school, Elizabeth described a case where an angry teacher was thickly writing with her class sheet with a red pencil. This experience explained to her what body color intensity is [2] .
In 1958, Elizabeth entered the Art School at the Institute of Art in Chicago . Her goal was to see early success in the field of commercial painting. but a case intervened: one day she was surprised to find the strange attractiveness of a still-life with Cezanne's apples in a local museum. The girl tried every time on the way to the classes to go to the museum to clarify, what is the focus here? As she recalled, this was her first time: considering the picture, she even temporarily lost her orientation in space and time: “Then I realized that I could also become an artist if I dared and decided.”
I discovered, when I was still quite young, and tried to find a balance in the world, as well as a place where I could balance various parts of myself; I discovered that art is the most appropriate tool for this. It saved my life. It can give shelter. Within a few minutes a day, I can count on him, I can lose my temper and get lost in my work; it helps to deal with the world and its contradictions.
Original Text (Eng.)I’m finding out how to find an equilibrium in the world. I think of art as a tool. It saved my life. It's a way to escape. I can count on it, I can get out of it. Most people can relate to that, when they do something. It’s all the contradictions, all the painful parts, all the hilarious parts. It's soothing to me. I feel what I am doing.- "BOMB" '62 [3] .
The next step: having secured a grant for a two-year MA course in fine arts, Elizabeth enters the Mills College (English) , a private liberal arts institute for women, located in Oakland (English) , California . In 1964 she received a Master of Arts certificate (MFA). in the late 60s, Murray arrived in New York; Since the 1970s, she has begun to exhibit regularly in the Paula Cooper Gallery .
