Description
Small flies, beetles, 4-7 mm long. The abdomen is flat, elongated, dark-colored with yellow markings on tergites. They are distinguished by a naked thick apical aristo and a basally enlarged main flagellomer, bare eyes and a metasternum, a straight vein R 4 + 5 . Biology is poorly understood, but it is known to be associated with sand dunes and coniferous forests, where they fly near yellow flowers from the genera Hieracium and Hypochaeris . Species Pelecocera latifrons Loew, 1856 is included in the Red Book of Ukraine [1] .
Systematics
The genus was first isolated in 1822 by the German entomologist Johann Wilhelm Maygen (1764-1845). Some specialists include the genus Chamaesyrphus [1] [2] as its subgenus.
