Biography
Neil bore the same name as John Doxopatra, a professor of rhetoric who taught in Constantinople in the 11th century. It is assumed that he was the archimandrite of the Church of Constantinople , the notary public of the patriarch, the proto- progenitor of Sinchell ( protosinkella ) and nomophilax (the guardian of laws) - the researchers identify him with Nikolai Doksopatr, mentioned in sources of Constantinople of the same time. In this case, he was of Greco-Sicilian origin, began his church career in Constantinople, having adopted monasticism with the name Nile, and then returned to Sicily.
In 1140, he opposed the thesis of Catholics , according to which the pope could be considered the successor to the apostle Peter . By the will of Emperor John Komnin wrote the Nomocanon (six copies were preserved). At the request of the Sicilian King Roger, he wrote in 1142, 1143 [1] or 1144, “De majorum Patriarch. sedibus "(" The device of the five patriarchates "Greek." Σύνταγμα περί των πέντε πατριαρχικών θρόνων. "; printed in Leiden , 1685). This work is simultaneously descriptive, geographical, political and church-historical in nature. In 1179-1180, it was translated into Armenian . Only two manuscripts of this work, created before 1453, have survived. He also left comments on the work of Athanasius the Great and Gregory the Theologian . Furthermore, it penned extensive theological work «Περὶ τῆς ἐξ ἀρχῆς καὶ μέχρι τέλους οἰκονομίας τοῦ Θεοῦ εἰς τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἱστορία ἐπωφελής, καὶ περὶ τῆς χριστιανικῆς πολιτείας ὅπως συνέστη, καὶ κατὰ πάντων τῶν αἱρετικῶν»; only two books of this work are preserved (in the first 263 chapters, in the second 203), so it is not established whether three others were written.
