Biography

Born in a very poor family, he received secondary education with the help of a village priest who noticed his abilities and decided to help him. At the age of 20, he entered the cathedral school in Viborg, graduating in 1832. In 1837 he received the degree of candidate of theology, in 1840 - the right to lecture. Already in 1841 he was able to occupy the Department of Philosophy at the University of Copenhagen , in 1850 he received the title of Ordinary Professor. In 1868 he became an honorary doctor of the University of Lund , in 1876 a member of the Academy of Sciences , in the 1880/1881 academic year he was elected rector of the university. He retired in 1883 due to health reasons.

He was considered one of the largest theologians of Denmark of his time, who published a large number of works. Originally an adherent of Hegel's philosophy, he soon changed his mind sharply under the influence of Kierkegaard . This change of mind was first manifested in Hielsen's article Evangelietroen og den moderne Bevidstbed (Faith in the Gospel and Modern Consciousness, 1849), which was followed by sharp attacks on the dogma of Bishop Martensen. Since that time, he looked at faith and knowledge as two opposite principles, admitting, however, the possibility of combining them in consciousness, precisely because of their difference. He expressed his views in detail in his lectures “Hindringer og Betingelsev for det aandelige Liv i Nutiden” (“Obstacles and conditions for the development of spiritual life in our time”, 1868) and in “Religionsfilosofi” (“Religious Philosophy”, 1869). Nielsen's main philosophical work is Grundideernes Logik (Logic of Basic Ideas, 1864-1866). First of all, he insisted on the difference between thinking and being, or between knowledge and power, trying at the same time to logically prove their unity. Nielsen’s teaching on faith and knowledge gave rise to a fierce polemic, from which stood out an article by H. Brechner, “Problemet om Tro og Viden” ( Hans Brøchner ; 1868).
