Jan Sokol (Czech Jan Sokol , April 18, 1936 , Prague , Czechoslovakia ) - Czech philosopher, translator of philosophical texts, professor at Charles University in Prague, politician. Education and technical professions

Jan Sokol is a jeweler by first education, and later also a mechanic. In 1958 he completed secondary education, and in 1963 he began to study mathematics in absentia at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at Charles University in Prague. In 1964-1990 worked as a programmer, and later as a senior fellow at the Research Institute of Mathematical Machines. He has published several books and a number of articles on computers. He studied various branches of technology (watchmaking, electronics, computers).

Academic Activities

Since 1991, Sokol taught philosophy, anthropology and religious studies at the Faculty of Education, as well as at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. In February 1997, he was awarded the academic title “Associate Professor”, in 2000 - “Professor”. Since 2000 he has been teaching at the Faculty of Humanities at Charles University in Prague, in 2008 he lectured on ethics and human rights at Harvard University in the USA.

His path to philosophy went through biblical studies, the study of the works of Nietzsche and his meetings with Jan Patochka . The philosophy of the Falcon is based on the traditions of phenomenology and personalism (Blondel, Marseille , Teilhard de Chardin , Rosenzweig, Levinas). At the center of his scientific interest lies philosophical anthropology, the history of ideas and the theme of the "life world". Here begins his lively interest in the relationship between philosophy and religion, philosophy and science, philosophy and politics. Since 1990, Sokol, in parallel with his political activities, has been studying the anthropological and social conditions of democracy; in addition, he has shown a strong interest in European history and European integration. Political participation

Jan Sokol was one of the first to sign Charter 77 , which advocated respect for the rights of a citizen and a person in Czechoslovakia. After the first free elections from June 7, 1990 to June 4, 1992, Sokol was a member of the House of Peoples of the Federal Assembly of Czechoslovakia from the Civic Forum party (Czech Občanské fórum ). He was the deputy chairman of the House of Peoples, the chairman of the parliamentary faction "Civil Forum" and the parliamentary delegation in the European Parliament . After the collapse of the Civil Forum, he joined the Civic Movement party (Czech. Občanské hnutí ), where he served as deputy chairman. Later, Sokol leaves the Civil Movement and begins to adhere to the ideas of the Christian Democratic Union - the Czechoslovak People's Party .

In February 1997, he was appointed adviser to the Minister of Education, Ivan Pilip ( Civil Democratic Party ). From January to July 1998, he was Minister of Education in the government of Joseph Toszowski ; After he was an adviser to Minister Edward Zeman ( Czech Social Democratic Party ). In 2003, Sokol was nominated by the Social Democrats as a coalition candidate in the third round of the Czech Republic presidential election, but in the end he was immediately ahead of Vaclav Klaus .
