Roger de Mortimer, Lord Wigmore

Roger de Mortimer ( born Roger Mortimer ; died before July 8, 1214 ) is Lord Wigmore, son of Hugo de Mortimer and Maud de Meschen.

Biography

Roger Mortimer was first mentioned in sources in 1174 when he supported King Henry II in his fight against the rebellious sons. In 1179, Roger killed the Welsh prince Cadwallon, who was under the protection of the king, and for this he was sent to prison, and Wigmore Castle was confiscated from his father. The very next year, Hugo de Mortimer died, and a year later Roger received forgiveness and freedom and entered into inheritance rights.

By this time, Mortimers had achieved great success in Central Wales and had become one of the most powerful genera of the Welsh brand . Roger continued his expansion. In 1195 , having received help from the king, he launched an invasion of Mailianid and built the castle of Cimaron on its territory. The next year, he joined forces with Hugo de Say, but in a great battle with Prince Deheybart Rhys ap Grifid near Radnor he was completely defeated, so that, according to sources, forty English knights and a lot of foot soldiers. But by 1200, Roger still managed to subjugate Mailienides.

Roger de Mortimer died in 1214 , leaving heir to the eldest son of Hugo (Hugo).

Family

Roger de Mortimer was married to a lady of the Ferrers clan — either Isabella, daughter of Valchelin de Ferrers, or Milicent — daughter of Robert Ferrers, Earl of Derby. Four children were born in this marriage:

  • Hugo de Mortimer, Lord Wigmore (died 1227 )
  • Ralph de Mortimer, Lord Wigmore (died 1246 )
  • Philippe de Mortimer
  • Joanna de Mortimer; husband - Walter Boshan [1]
