Biography

The son of a Lutheran religious leader Ernst Power. Stein-Streicher, nephew of Andreas Streicher, came from his family of famous clavier masters. In the years 1839-1844. studied music in Vienna with Simon Zechter (composition) and Franz Xaver Mozart (piano), then in 1845-1847. cultivated in Munich under the leadership of Franz Lachner .

Since 1847 he worked in Mainz, heading the local leadertafel on the recommendation of Lachner. In the Mainz period he wrote and staged the operas Don Riego (1849) and Red Mask ( German Die rothe Maske ; 1850), performed with choral compositions and theater music.

Since 1851, he settled in England for many years. He successfully performed in London, presenting extensive overview programs on the history of clavier music. He taught piano at the National School of Music Studies, then at the Royal College of Music . In 1896, he retired and left for Germany.

He composed a number of collections of ancient clavier music, edited editions of the Well-Tempered Clavier , complete collections of clavier music by Joseph Haydn , Karl Maria von Weber and Ludwig van Beethoven .
