Biography
He graduated in 1958 from the historical department of the philological faculty of Petrozavodsk State University .
Since 1958 he has been working at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences . In 1970 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme “Problems of Petroglyphs of Karelia”, in 1986 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme “Rock paintings of Fennoscandia (hunting tradition)”.
In the 1960s and 1980s, he excavated ancient settlements in the regions of Karelia. Expeditions led by Yu.A. Savvateev discovered new clusters of rock paintings ( petroglyphs ) in the lower reaches of the Vyg River ( Zalavruga ) and on the eastern shore of Lake Onega ( Onega petroglyphs ).
In 1988-2005 - Director of the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Karelian Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Since 1993, he has been a member of the State Expert Council under the President of the Russian Federation on particularly valuable cultural heritage sites of the peoples of the Russian Federation.
In 1997-2004, he was deputy chief editor of the Karelia encyclopedia .
