In 1848 he was elected secretary general of the Modena interim government. During the reaction, he moved to Piedmont , where he naturalized and was a teacher of history and geography. In 1859, Count Cavour sent Zini with a secret mission to Modena ; a little later, Zini, as King’s Extraordinary Commissioner, seized the duchy and ruled it a few days before the arrival of the governor.
Later, he honorably held a number of important government posts. In 1853 he published Sommario della Storia d'Italia, which was a success among young people and withstood several editions. Between 1866 and 1875 he published Storia d'Italia dal 1850 al 1866, which is a continuation of the story written by La Farina.
