Physico-geographical characteristics
Barre des Ecrins is the highest peak in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, the Hautes-Alpes department and the historical region of Occitania . Barre des Ecrins is located on a ridge leading from west to east from the peak of Loris to Barr des Ecrins and then extending northeast to the peak of Pointe de la Grande Sagne . The southern side of the peak is rocky, while the northern side is covered with ice - the Glacier Blanc begins on the slope.
Climbing History
The summit of Barr-des-Ecrins was first conquered on July 25, 1864 by the British A.W. Moore , H. Walker and E. Whimper , accompanied by guides M. Cro , K. Almer . They climbed the eastern crest of the peak along the northern wall along the Whimper Corridor and reached the peak along the crest. Whimper subsequently described this ascent in his book [2] [3] .
W. A. Coolidge completely passed the northern wall by a direct ascent to the top in July 1870 [4] .
The first ascent without guides was made by F. Gardnier and C. and L. Pilkington in 1878.
In September 1880, P. Gaspard and A. Duhamel made the first ascent along the southern slope [3] .
