Biography
Karl Siegfried was born on January 22, 1830 in Magdeburg in the family of Karl Wilhelm Siegfried, city planning officer [1] . He studied theology and philosophy at the universities of Halle and Bonn . His teachers were Mueller , Gupfeld , Bernhardi , Ross and Richel [2] . After graduation, he taught at the gymnasiums of Magdeburg and Guben . In 1859, in Halle, Siegfried defended his thesis and received a Ph.D. He taught at the gymnasium at the cathedral in Magdeburg until 1865, then at the Pfort Land School [3] .
In 1875, Karl Siegfried was appointed full professor of Old Testament theology at the University of Jena and received an honorary doctorate there. He was the dean of the faculty of theology, in 1882 and 1895 he was rector of the university for a semester [4] . In 1885 he became a member of the Council of Churches of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach [3] . As a scientist, he was known for historical and critical studies of the Old Testament, the study of ancient Hebrew and Hellenistic Judaism, and reviews of the works of Philo of Alexandria . In 1901, Siegfried left work due to a serious illness. He died on January 9, 1903 in Jena [1] .
