Biography

He graduated from high school in Duisburg , then studied law in Bonn , Heidelberg and the University of Berlin , at the same time took music lessons from Siegfried Den and Friedrich Kiel . From 1853 to 1856 he was an intern, then made an educational trip to France and Italy and after that he began to teach music in Heidelberg. In 1860 he was rehabilitated (according to the works of Mozart) and became a privat-docent of the history of music and musical aesthetics. In 1864 he moved to Munich , where in 1865 Mozart was awarded the title of professor at the University of Munich by the Bavarian king, but could not start teaching, as the university did not accept him. From 1868 to 1872 he lived in Badenweiler , and then returned to Heidelberg. Since 1875 he taught at the Polytechnic in Karlsruhe and in 1880 became a professor of music in it.

He was one of the most famous and readable music writers of his time, he studied the biographies and works of Mozart , Beethoven , Wagner . He was a supporter of the New German school of music. The main works are Beethovens Leben (1864-1877), Musikalisches Skizzenbuch, Neues Skizzenbuch (1869), Beethoven Liszt, Wagner (1874) and Mozarts Leben (2 editions, 1877). In addition, he published Mozarts Briefe (2 editions, 1877). According to the ESBE assessment, his biographies of Beethoven and Mozart “ combine a fascinating fiction form with the accuracy of scientific research ” [4] .
