Festival Manifest

Part 1

  • We understand art as an area of activity that justifies the existence of humanity. Without art, humanity only consumes, multiplies and parasitizes, and an individual person is not able to overcome the boundaries of his own "I" and feel his unity with other people.
  • We consider animation as part of the endless universe of art, as one of its kindest and most exciting forms. We give preference to animation only because it is most able to serve as a bridge between the author and the viewer.
  • Today's world is suffering from a lack of good. Author's animation, which has absorbed the enormous humanistic heritage of the past, has been discovering and awakening good in man for almost a century. Step by step, we will strive to destroy the walls of everyday life, suffering and indifference.
  • We will do our best so that as many people as possible learn to appreciate good animation, strive to become spectators and help authors create new ones.
  • We believe that an author who has devoted his life to creating animation should be able to lead a decent life and receive all the benefits necessary for such a life. This opportunity is provided by the interest of the audience in his work, the awakening of which we are aware of as our duty and the duty of all those who sympathize with us.
  • Our main goal is to awaken the ability to love good animation with as many people as possible.
  • For the correct perception of animation, an open sky and darkness, formed by the natural rotation of the Earth, are necessary. Only such darkness can return us to ourselves, breaking away from the illusions and bustle of civilization.
  • Author's animation in a circle of people who are close in spirit - this is the viewer's path to himself, not connected by daily conventions. We gather together around a forest fire to take a peek into the souls of cartoon artists.

Part 2

  • Moving pictures should make love, rejoice, suffer or hate. If this does not happen, we acknowledge the work as a mistake, but continue to respect the author.
  • We understand the insignificance of man before the greatness and beauty of nature. Therefore, we strive to eliminate all traces of our presence after the end of the festival.
  • We see in every person the desire to do something good and try to give him such an opportunity. Therefore, we give preference to volunteer work at no cost, respecting it, and try to organize such work as efficiently as possible.
  • We do not command or obey. We just suggest how you can help, and be sure to thank for the contribution of value to the festival.
  • We try to distinguish the desire to take advantage of the desire to help. Where we manage to do this, we behave fairly.
  • We say "Thank you!": To the volunteers - because the festival is being done with their hands; to the authors - for remaining themselves; animators, artists, composers, sound engineers, editors and all-all-all - for what they help to create; to producers and directors - for making creativity possible; viewers - for the perception of the animation and for the fact that they can tell others about it; festival organizers - because they share our values; festival sponsors - for your understanding.

History

The Insomnia festival is organized by a team whose experience is based on the animation platform of the Empty Hills free art festival.

In 2008 , art and animated films were shown on a small screen on the art scene at night.

In 2009 , there were 3 small screens, one of which was completely devoted to animation.

In 2011 , the Living Room space was created with a large screen, a huge screen control center in the form of a sideboard, from which a beam of a powerful projector, a sofa, a floor lamp hit, a second screen - a TV and a fireplace (video installation). It was in 2011 that the team of organizers really formed.

The Organizing Committee of the Empty Hills in 2012 decided not to hold the festival, and the platform with animated films in 2013 turned to a full-fledged independent festival and became known as Insomnia.

Dream Contest

The main program is competitive. Everyone can send their short animated films to the competition program, after which they undergo selection. At the festival, the jury reviews the competition program. In addition, viewers choose their favorite by voting.

The "Dream Competition" is held in three categories: "Balancing act" (amateur animation and experiments), "Debutory" (works by novice authors) and "Professional flooring" (professional works).

The competition program included films from Russia, the USA, Canada, India, Syria, Japan, Poland, Estonia, the Czech Republic and other countries.

Venue

In 2013, the festival was held near the village of Nikola-Lenivets, Kaluga Region.

In 2014 and 2015, the festival was also held in the Kaluga region. In 2014, a place was chosen in the Yukhnovsky district: the rural village "Village of Rylaki", the tract Zuev Khutor.
In 2015, the festival venue was located near the village of Labeki.

Festival Objects

The main objects of the festival are screens and director's booths.

In 2013, in the first year of the festival, three screens and three director's booths were built - “Harms Head”, “Spider” and “Pyramid”.

After the festival, so that no traces of a person remained on the site, all objects were burned.

For the 2014 festival, an architectural solution for the collapsible design of director's booths was developed. MCC (Screen Control Center) are based on the hyperboloid design of the famous Shukhov towers , introduced into the architecture by V. G. Shukhov .

On the crowdfunding platform Planeta.ru , a project was launched to raise funds for the construction of two MCCs, which was successfully completed by collecting the necessary amount. As a result, two ten-meter screens and two Screen Control Centers, illuminated in the dark, became the main objects and were remembered by the guests of the festival.

In 2014, the Iguan playground was also built according to the original design.

The entire festival space is annually decorated with art objects of various sizes and degrees of pretentiousness. In addition, cafes, tents for daytime programs and other festival infrastructure are being built for each festival.

Since 2017, a daily music scene has been working at Insomnia, created by the team of the friendly festival, Be Good! On the stage there are concerts of representatives of domestic independent music in the styles of rock , blues , funk , reggae , jazz , worldmusic .

Festival Volunteering

The preparation and holding of the festival is fully provided by volunteers. Volunteers build and decorate festival facilities, work at checkpoints and parking lots, guard screens and equipment, help in cafes, and answer guests' questions in the information center.

In 2014, the Insomnia festival was included in the list of 10 best Russian volunteer projects according to the poster of the Afisha magazine [1] .

Non-Festival Impressions

During the festival off season, Insomnia holds cartoon shows for children and adults in Moscow, St. Petersburg and other cities.
