The 5th Moscow Gymnasium is a Moscow gymnasium in which Ivan Ilyin , Vladimir Mayakovsky , Boris Pasternak and many other famous people of Russia studied.
The gymnasium was formed from a group of parallel classes of the 1st gymnasium : out of its 18 classes in 1865 seven were separated, which made up a separate independent 5th gymnasium, with a special pedagogical council and a special inspection, but under the supervision of the director of the 1st gymnasium. In 1865, there were 637 students in the 1st gymnasium, and with the opening of the 5th gymnasium, 366 students fell [1] .
The director of the 5th gymnasium was Mikhail Afanasevich Malinovsky ; inspector - geography teacher Fedor Fedorovich Miller; Russian language teacher - Fedor Aleksandrovich Gilyarov . Initially, gymnasiums actually coexisted in one room (on Volkhonka Street ); the real separation of the 5th gymnasium occurred only in 1870. One of the students recalled:
I have the best memories of the gymnasium. <...> Order and discipline reigned in the gymnasium, but the students were not intimidated, and the teachers, for the most part, were humane, friendly ...

In 1876 V.P. Basov was appointed director; since 1887 - A.N. Schwartz ; since 1897 - A.V. Adolf .
The gymnasium was located in the house of Prince Gagarin, on the corner of Povarskaya and Bolshaya Molchanovka . In the 1920s, school No. 91 was opened in this building.
