It is a part and is the main settlement of Ammerland County. The population is 23,087 people (as of December 31, 2018). [1] It covers an area of 179 km². The official code is 03 4 51 007 .

Administrative divisions
The Westerstede community is subdivided into 24 urban and rural areas. Oholt, Oholterfeld, Ollenhard, Petersfeld, Tarbarg, Torsholt, Westerloi, Westerloerfeld, Westersteerfeld.
Government institutions
In Westerstede are the Ammerland County Board and the District Tax Office. The council of the Westerstede community consists of 34 councilors. The position of burgomaster since 2014 has been held by Klaus Gross.

In Westersted there is a large Clinical Center consisting of the civil hospital Ammerlandklinik [2] and the military hospital of the Bundeswehr [3] . The clinical center includes the departments of general surgery, anesthesiology, gynecology, vascular and thoracic surgery, internal medicine, neurology, radiology and urology. In addition to these areas, the clinic cooperates with the center of nuclear medicine and radiation, otolaryngologists and ophthalmologists. Near the clinic is a hospice . Ammerlandklinik is the educational clinical center of the Medical University of Hannover. It has 343 beds. It employs about 1,200 people.
