History
The city is quite old settlement. On its territory there are remnants of the settlement of the Iron Age, the foundations of buildings of the II-IV centuries. The city church was founded at the beginning of the XIV century, the discovery took place in 1468. Later the church was completed.
The first mention of the city dates back to 1312. A monk named Ingemund called the city Baldenaes (in translation the Great Isthmus). For a long time the city was called Bro By (in the translation of the Village Bridge).
In 1878 a railway station was built, the city became an important railway junction. But later, by the beginning of the 1990s, the railway station lost its significance and was closed.
In 1942, Bollnes received city status.
