He had a theological education, was a priest of the diocese of Paris and a master of arts, in 1766 he refused to become an aggregate of fine literature at the University of Paris , from 1762 to 1776 he taught rhetoric at the royal college of Rouen and was the main vicar of the diocese of Lescars . In 1766-1767 he did not teach: on February 16, 1766 he became a curator in Bres, but the next day he moved to Ambriere-le-Vallée, and in 1767 returned to teaching rhetoric in Rouen. Since 1776 he worked in Paris. In 1781 he became a member of the Academy of Inscriptions and Fine Literature , and was also a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of Rouen. He was a fan of Rousseau 's ideas, at the end of his life he supported some of the ideas of the Great French Revolution , including the expansion of the possibilities of female education.
As a classic philologist, he translated and prepared editions of the works of ancient Greek and Roman orators, as well as the church fathers; He translated the works of Demosthenes , Aeschinus , Isocrates , Lysius , Herodotus , Thucydides , Cicero , Basil of Caesarea , John Chrysostom and many others. His most famous writings include Harangues d'Eschine et de Démosthène sur la Couronne (Rouen, 1768) and De la Constitution des Romains sous les Rois et au temps de la République (Paris, 1792).
