Francesca da Rimini - small ballets to the music of the symphonic fantasy of the same name by P. I. Tchaikovsky , written according to the plot from the Fifth song “Hell” from Dante ’s Divine Comedy .
For the first time, the ballet to the music of P. I. Tchaikovsky was staged by M. M. Fokin on November 28, 1915 for a charity concert on the stage of the Mariinsky Theater . One night, the ballet “ Eros ” was shown with him to the music of Serenade for the string orchestra of P. I. Tchaikovsky . The low cost of staging, the possibility of concert performance and an erotic plot provided numerous ballet productions, with some variations in the plot. Soviet choreographers especially often turned to this ballet since the “ Khrushchev thaw ”, when interest in the choreographic interpretation of musical works increased and requirements for “ideological” productions significantly decreased.

Story
The main content of the Divine Comedy is the author’s journey through the circles of Hell , Purgatory and Paradise , in which he is accompanied by the shadow of the most famous Latin poet Virgil . When visiting hell, stories are told about various sinners. The real story of Francesca was popular in the Renaissance , and after expounding it, Dante became one of the eternal plots of literature and art. The story tells of a married lady Francesca 's love for Paolo , her husband’s younger brother. Francesca's husband Giancotto Malatesta or Giotto tracked down his lovers and killed both.
