Spasskaya Tower (festival)

The international military music festival "Spasskaya Tower" is a military tattoo musical festival held in Moscow. It is attended by Russian and foreign military orchestras, folklore groups, as well as units of the honorary guard of the heads of state [1] . Traditionally, it ends with a large-scale event on Red Square. The festival is dedicated to Moscow City Day.

The name of the festival was given by the Spasskaya Tower of the Moscow Kremlin on Red Square, near which the festival traditionally takes place.

History

  • 2006, September 2, Poklonnaya Gora: for the first time in the framework of the celebration of Moscow City Day on Poklonnaya Hill, demonstrations were held by units of the honorary guard of the heads of state accompanied by famous military bands.
  • 2007, I festival: September 13 - 16, 2007. The festival was called the Kremlin Dawn - 2007. Collectives from Russia, Great Britain, Canada, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Denmark, Italy took part in it. A total of 47 musical groups, 25 from Russia and 22 from countries of five continents.
  • 2009, II festival: September 5-10, 2009. The festival was attended by military bands and honorary guard units of heads of state from 9 countries: Great Britain, Israel, India, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Russia, Finland and France. In total - about 1000 musicians.
  • 2010, III festival: September 4 - 9, 2010. The festival was attended by about a thousand musicians, military personnel representing units of the honorary guard of the heads of state, leading military orchestra and creative groups of Russia, Germany, the USA, Israel, France, the Kingdom of Bahrain, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, as well as a team of pipers of the European Union.
  • 2011, IV festival: from August 31 to September 4, 2011. Altogether, 20 military musical groups and honorary guard units of heads of state from 14 countries performed on Red Square: Russia, Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Jordan, Spain, Italy, China, Mexico, Norway, Pakistan, Ukraine, France and Switzerland.
  • 2012, V festival: September 1 - 8, 2012. The festival was attended by groups from 10 countries: Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, Singapore, France. At the festival, Mireille Mathieu (France) sang the Russian anthem on Red Square. The festival was dedicated to the heroes of the war of 1812.
  • 2013, VI festival: September 1 - 8, 2013. The festival was attended by groups from 13 countries: Austria, Belarus, Great Britain, Holland, China, the United Arab Emirates, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Switzerland, and Japan. The concept of the War and Peace of 1812 festival determined the nature of the music program.
  • 2014, VII festival: from August 30 to September 7, 2014. 28 groups from 10 countries participated in the festival: Armenia, Kazakhstan, Ireland, Italy, China, Mexico, Russia, Serbia, Turkey and Switzerland. In total, more than 1,500 military musicians, soldiers of the guard of honor units, artists of folklore ensembles [2] .
  • 2015, VIII festival: September 5 - 13, 2015. The festival was attended by groups from 13 countries: Belarus, Belgium, Great Britain, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Mexico, Pakistan, Russia, Slovenia, Japan.

  • 2016, IX festival: from August 27 to September 4, 2016. The festival was attended by groups from 10 countries: Austria, Belarus, Greece, Israel, Italy, Mongolia, Russia, Singapore, Slovenia, Japan. On August 27, for the first time, a ceremonial parade of festival participants took place on the territory of VDNH [3] .
  • 2017, X festival: from August 26 to September 3, 2017. The festival was attended by groups from 10 countries: Armenia, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, Mexico, Russia, Turkey, Switzerland.
  • 2018, XI festival: from August 24 to September 2, 2018. The festival was attended by groups from 10 countries: the UK, Italy, Mexico, Monaco, Myanmar, Holland, Oman, Russia, Switzerland, Sri Lanka, as well as several international squads. The number of spectators of evening shows reached 90 thousand people. In total, more than half a million spectators attended the event.
  • 2019, XII festival: from August 23 to September 1, 2019. The festival was attended by groups from 12 countries: Azerbaijan, Belarus, Egypt, Italy, Kazakhstan, China, North Korea, Norway, the Republic of Korea, Russia, Turkey, Japan, as well as two international groups: the Celtic Bagpipes and Drum Orchestra and the Celtic Dance Team.

Musical Director

From 2007 to 2016, the post of musical director was held by Lieutenant General Valery Mikhailovich Khalilov . After his death, the post was abolished, and functions transferred to the artistic council [4] .

Since 2018, the music director of the Festival is the head of the Military Orchestra Service of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation - the main military conductor, Major General Timofei Konstantinovich Mayakin [5] .
