According to the 2000 census [1] , the parish has 21,360 residents comprising 6,699 households and 5,030 families . The population density is 18.00 people per km 2 . There are 7,915 residential buildings in the parish, with a building density of about 7.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 51.79%, African Americans - 47.08%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.16%, Asians - 0.23%, Hawaiians - 0.00%, representatives of other races - 0.18 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.54%. Hispanics accounted for 0.74% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 35.60% are children under the age of 18, 52.40% of households are married couples living together, 18.00% of households are single women without a spouse, 24.90% of households households are not related to families , 22.50% of households consist of one person, 8.50% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.76 people and the average family size is 3.26 people.
