Background

By January 1924, the situation of Khorezm was significantly complicated. By that time, British semi-automatic rifles and machine guns were in service with the cavalry units of the Basmachi, numbering 3,000 people, under the command of Junaid Khan [1] . Also, a number of horse detachments of local kurbashi numbering 6,000 people obeyed Dzhunaid Khan [1] .

After the decision was made to launch a campaign against the Bolsheviks, the Basmachi, having come out of the desert, captured several villages and, under the leadership of the former Minister of the Khiva Khanate Sadyk Bakalov and the leader of the Turks, Agadzhi Ishan, organized uprisings in Sadivar , Pitnak and Khazarasp and entered Khanka .

Operation Progress

On January 19, 1924, the Basmachi besieged Khiva. The garrison of the city of 290 people successfully repelled the assault attempts. For the defense of Khiva, working companies and Komsomol detachments were formed, the number of which was about 500 people.

During the operation, the commander of the garrison, Angello, a Hungarian by nationality, was killed. Having been seriously injured, he was captured. After torturing him, the Basmachi cut off his head, which they planted on a stake and put on display by the defenders at the gates of the fortress.

During the defense of Khiva, the Basmach detachments destroyed and inflicted severe wounds on approximately two hundred Red Army soldiers [1] .

At that time, units of the Red Army began to advance towards Khiva. In the area of Pitnak, serious battles broke out with the Basmachi of Agadzhi Ishan, which lasted about two days. The Basmachi were defeated. At Turtkul, a cavalry squadron under the command of political instructor Surinov, having managed to bypass the Basmach outposts, went behind them and joined the defenders of Khiva, inflicting a heavy defeat on the Basmachi and forcing them to refuse to continue the siege.

Consequences

Further developing the offensive, units of the Red Army were able to practically destroy the Basmach detachments. Junaid Khan fled abroad.
