Kerr, Charles (artist)

Charles Kerr ( born Charles Henry Malcolm Kerr , also CHM Kerr or Charles Kerr ; 1858 - 1907 ) is an English artist and illustrator , known for his illustrations of the adventure novels of Ryder Haggard [1] .

Born on January 22, 1858 in London, one of six sons and two daughters of Robert Malcolm Kerr ( born Robert Malcolm Kerr ; 1821-1902) - London judge, and Mary Susanna Soulie Kerr ( born Maria Susannah Soley Kerr ).

He received his initial education at the Corpus Christi College ( Corpus Christi College ), Oxford . Then he studied at the English Royal Academy of Arts and at the Paris Academy of Julian . Since 1884, regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. Then - in many English exhibitions. In 1890, Kerr was accepted into the British Royal Society of Artists ( English Royal Society of British Artists ).

Charles Kerr illustrated the books of many writers: Ryder Haggard , Robert Stevenson , Andrew Lang , Arthur Conan Doyle .

Kerr was among those who were invited to a gala dinner on May 1, 1889, at the Criterion Restaurant on the occasion of being awarded the title of Honorary Member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, James Whistler .

In 1906, he was taken to a private psychiatric clinic in Chizik ( London ) due to the effects of morphine use. He was discharged from her and was under the supervision of his wife at his home in Burgess Hill . He died on December 7, 1907 .

He was married to Gertrude Lizzy Giles ( Eng. Gertrude Lizzie Giles ), who posed for him in 1905 for the painting "The Visitor" ( Eng. The Visitor ) [2] , which is currently in the Tate collection.
