Solferino ( Italian: Solferino ) is a commune in Italy , located in the Lombardy region , subordinated to the administrative center of Mantova . Located on a hill south of Lake Garda , 7 km west of the Mincio River.

As of September 2017, the population is 2606 people [1] , the population density is 202 people / km².
On June 12 ( 24 ), 1859 , a battle between the Austrian, French and Sardinian armies took place near Solferino, under the command of the emperors Franz Joseph , Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel, respectively, which in the 19th century were considered the most bloody [2] . The number of wounded and dead prompted the Swiss doctor and public figure Henri Dunant , who was at that time in Solferino, to initiate the creation of the international Red Cross movement [3] .
