History
From 1797 to 1870, the United States maintained consular relations with the Vatican, and then established diplomatic relations with the Pope (as head of the Papal state) from 1848 to 1868. In 1870, the Italian kingdom incorporated the territory of the Vatican into its composition. From 1870 to 1984, the United States did not have diplomatic relations with the Vatican. Several American presidents, however, visited the Vatican periodically to discuss international, humanitarian, and political issues. In 1984, the United States and the Vatican resumed diplomatic relations. The United States and the Vatican consult and collaborate on many international issues of mutual concern, including respect for human rights, interfaith understanding, conflict prevention, and environmental protection.
