According to the 2000 census [1] , 21 601 residents of the 7,663 households and 5,739 families live in the parish. The population density is 44.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the parish there are 8,370 residential buildings, with a building density of about 17.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 62.78%, African - Americans - 35.49%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.20%, Asians - 0.19%, Hawaiians - 0.02%, representatives of other races - 0.53 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.79%. Hispanics made up 1.45% of the population, regardless of race .
Out of the total number of households , 37.60% are children under the age of 18, 51.50% of households are married couples living together, 18.20% of households are single women without a spouse, 25.10% of households households are not related to families , 21.50% of households consist of one person, 7.10% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 2.74 people and the average family size is 3.20 people.
