Camponotus lateralis (lat.) Is a species of wood ants of the genus Camponotus from the subfamily Formicina ( Formicidae ) [1] .

Western Palaearctic: Northwest Africa ( Algeria ); The Caucasus ; Crimea; Southern and Central Europe ; Israel Lebanon Syria Turkey [1] [2] .
Description
Wood ants are reddish-black (head and breast are reddish-brown, belly is brownish-brown). Medium in size, workers about 5 mm long (soldiers and females are larger). It differs in the following features: spaced hairs are only in the posterior part of the dorsum of the propodeum; propodeal dosum behind angular, but without teeth; body weakly punctured (partially shiny), dorsal surface of the mesosome with a deep methanotic suture. The stalk between the breast and the abdomen consists of one segment ( petiolus ), bearing a vertical scale. The sting is absent [1] .
Systematics
The species was first described in 1792 using materials from France under the original name Formica lateralis Olivier, 1792 and later included in the subgenus Myrmentoma along with such species as Camponotus piceus , Camponotus gestroi and Camponotus anatolicus [1] [3] .
