Creativity
The early work done in Paris in the late 1940s reflects the influence on the young artist of the creative method Alberto Giacometti , his passion for the philosophy of existentialism . Turnbull's sculptures in painted steel from 1963-1968 , often a whimsical zigzag or wavy shape, are consonant with the problems explored by American minimalists . During these years he was interested in mechanical repetition; combinatorics of finished geometric blocks; impact on the sculpture of the external environment, context.
In the second half of the 70s, Turnbull departs from minimalist seriality and returns to creating small sculptures filled with intimate sensations. [2]
