Mazie Hirono ( born Mazie Hirono ; born November 3, 1947 , Fukushima (prefecture) , Japan ) is an American politician , member of the Democratic Party , and a US senator from Hawaii . The first woman of Asian descent elected to the US Senate.

Prior to her senatorial career, Hirono was a member of the US House of Representatives , and before that, she was the vice governor of the state of Hawaii.
Biography
Maisie Hirono was born on November 3, 1947 in Fukushima Prefecture, in Japan. Although she was born in Japan, her mother was an American citizen. [2] In 1955, Macy moved with her mother and brother to the United States and settled in Honolulu . Here, Maisie graduated from high school and entered the University of Hawaii , which she graduated in 1970 with a bachelor's degree in psychology. Later, she entered the Law Center of Georgetown University , where in 1978 she received the degree of Doctor of Law. After that, she returned to Hawaii, where she began legal practice.
Political career
After being elected to the state parliament in 1980 [3] (where she was re-elected several times until 1994), in 1994 Hirono was elected vice-governor of the state [4] (assumed office on December 2, 1994). In 1998, she was re-elected to this post [5] , where she worked until December 2002.
In 2002, Hirono was a candidate for governor of the state of Hawaii, but lost the election to a candidate from the Republican Party [6] [7] .
In November 2006, Hirono was elected to the US House of Representatives from the 2nd Hawaii constituency. [8] Twice (in 2008 and 2010) was re-elected to this post [9] [10] .
In November 2012, Macy Hirono was elected to the US Senate from Hawaii. [11] She took office in January 2013. He is a member of several standing Senate commissions (for the affairs of the armed forces, for veterans and for the environment). Since January 3, 2015, he is a member of the US Armed Forces Committee .
