Biography

Daughter of Sebastien de Luxembourg , Duke de Pentevre and Viscount de Martigues, and Maria de Boquer.

Inherited vast land holdings and huge fortune. Thanks to the influence of the queen, 18-year-old brother-in-law of Henry III Philip Emmanuel of Lorraine , Duke of Mercury, was chosen among the numerous applicants for her hand. The marriage was concluded July 12, 1575 [2] .

In 1582, the king appointed the Duke de Merker Governor of Brittany , where he led the local Catholics and became one of the most stubborn supporters of the Catholic League . Mary enjoyed great influence in the province, as she came from Jeanne de Pentevre and Charles de Blois . She tried to take advantage of the civil war to restore the independence of the Duchy of Breton , led by her husband [2] .

Henry IV dismissed Merker from the post of governor, but Mary for a long time refused to recognize Bourbon as king, and only in 1603 was able to return to Paris on the occasion of the funeral of the sister-in-law, Louise of Lorraine .

In a marriage with the Duke de Merker, four children were born, but three sons died in childhood, and the daughter of Francoise (1592-1669) became the heiress. Henry IV proposed to extradite her as his illegitimate son from Gabrielle d'Estre , Cesar de Vendome . Maria refused, saying that she could not mix “her noble blood with the blood of a bastard, even royal”, but the lack of support from her relatives and the amount of 4,295,350 livres borrowed by the king from Sully convinced her to agree. The marriage was concluded on July 7, 1609.
