Biography
Petelin in a free interpretation means a cock - Handl, Händl and Gallus in German and in Latin. He used the Latin form of his name, to which he added Carniolus , indicating the place of origin - Krajina in Slovenia.
Educated, apparently, in one of the Cistercian monasteries in Krajina. In 1564-1566 traveled to Austria.
In 1574-1575 he was a singer in the Vienna court chapel . After 1575 he served in the Cistercian monasteries of Austria, Bohemia, Moravia, Southern Silesia.
In 1580-1585 he was the leader of the choir with Bishop Olomoucki , in 1585 he was the bandmaster (possibly regent (conductor) ) and the organist of St. Jana in Prague.
Creativity
Composition began to be practiced around 1575. Motets are of greatest importance among his compositions (Opus musicum harmoniarum, 1586-1590, contains 374 motets for all liturgical festivals). Some of them show a connection with Slovenian folk songs.
The madrigals of J. Gallus won wide popularity. He was a master of both homophonic and polyphonic styles. In his works he combined the polyphonic style of the Franco-Flemish school of the late Renaissance with the style of the Venetian school of the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries.

The author of both sacred and secular music and so-called parody masses .
It is considered a prolific composer, who is credited with more than 500 compositions, including choral works.
The creativity of J. Gallus played an important role in the formation of the musical culture of the Renaissance.
