According to the United States Census Bureau , the total area of the parish is 668.221 km 2 , of which 626.781 km 2 are land and 41.440 km 2 or 6.400% are water bodies.

According to the 2000 census [1] , 21 216 residents of 6,992 households and 5,551 families live in the parish. The population density is 33.00 people per km 2 . On the territory of the parish there are 7 605 residential buildings, with a building density of about 12.00 buildings per km 2 . Racial composition of the population: white - 49.99%, African Americans - 49.38%, Native Americans ( Indians ) - 0.09%, Asians - 0.05%, Hawaiians - 0.00%, representatives of other races - 0.12 %, representatives of two or more races - 0.37%. Hispanics accounted for 0.61% of the population, regardless of race .
Of the total number of households , 38.90% are children under the age of 18, 55.30% of households are married couples living together, 19.30% of households are single women without a spouse, 20.60% of households households are not related to families , 18.40% of households consist of one person, 7.70% of households consist of elderly people (65 years and older) living alone. The average household size is 3.00 and the average family size is 3.43.
Age composition of the income: 29.50% under the age of 18, 9.80% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 21.40% from 45 to 64, and 21.40% from 65 and older. The average age of a resident is 34 years.
