History
The first issue was published on Saturday, January 1/17, 1857 with the subtitle “a weekly publication devoted to the national economy and state studies.” For obvious reasons, more than half of its volume belonged to the pen of the editor-publisher: on p. 1–10 the article “The Importance of Nature in the State Economy,” p. 10-11 - "California and Australian Gold," on p. 11-12 - “A few words about the high cost of firewood”, p. 20-21 - “A high percentage ...” (from the English “ The Economist ”), p. 24 - “Bibliographic News” ... In number 37, the subtitle was replaced by “a weekly publication devoted to the national economy, state science and technical sciences”, and in No. 38-52 - to “a weekly publication on national economy, state science and technical sciences ".
In 1858 (Nos. 53-104) the subtitle was already read as "Weekly publication, on the state economy and auxiliary sciences."
In 1859 (Nos. 105–156) the name of the journal changed to “Political and Economic Index” with the subtitle “Statistical and Industrial Journal”. In the issue, as a rule, such headings as “Political Index”, “Statistical Index”, “Foreign Correspondence”, “Industrial Exchange Index”, “Exchange Index”, “Promotion Index” and “Bibliographic Index” were already highlighted.
In 1860 ( nos. 157–208), the subtitle disappeared, and the last numbers (nos. 203–208) appeared under the title Economic Index.
In 1861 (No. 209-310) the name of the magazine was changed to "Index of Economic, Political and Industrial," and it began to appear twice a week - on Thursdays and Sundays. And on Sunday issue No. 310 of December 31, 1861 / January 12, 1862, on the first page, the editors reported that:
Since 1862, the "Economic Index", which has achieved its main goal, arousing public interest in political and economic issues, has ceased. In its place, the “Economist” , appearing indefinitely, in the form of an Appendix to the Index, is published as an independent publication and will be published monthly in books, each from 150 to 200 pages; track. in the amount of a Pointer.
The editorial board of the journal was located almost all five years at the address: Mokhovaya, 28 (the house of Esakova, then Bichenskaya). In the first year, the magazine was printed at the printing house of K. Metzig, then at the printing house of the headquarters of the Separate Internal Guard Corps . For five years, the price of a subscription without delivery has increased from 5 to 7 rubles. silver, with delivery and mailing - from 8 to 10 rubles. in silver.
In the output, the editor is most often indicated as “Dr. Vernadsky,” sometimes “Dr. I. Vernadsky, S.S. ”,“ Doctor of Historical Science, Political Economy and Statistics I. Vernadsky ”or“ Dr. I. Vernadsky, Ordinary Professor of Political Economy and Statistics ”.
