English was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. [2] After a decade of working in information programs, in the 1980s, English began her career as a screenwriter, working on the television films Cutter of Heaven (1980) and How She Was a Man (1984). In 1985, she created her first sitcom, Foley Square for CBS . She then worked as a screenwriter in the sitcom My Sister Sam before creating Murphy Brown . In 2008, English acted as director, screenwriter, and producer of her debut movie Women . English actually wrote the script for the film fifteen years before it was released, but for various reasons its production was delayed.
