Story
Outside of Oxcross
Robb Stark ( Richard Madden ) wins another battle against the Lannister army. After that, he discusses the fate of the captured Lannister soldiers with Lord Ruse Bolton ( Michael McElhatton ). Bolton offers to torture and then liquidate the prisoners so as not to waste food on them, but Robb insists on a fair treatment for them and reminds him that his sisters are still in captivity in the Royal Harbor. Going around the battlefield, Robb meets field nurse Talis ( Una Chaplin ) and helps her amputate the feet of one of the Lannister soldiers. Despite Robb's argument for war justification, Talis tells him of his responsibility for the bloody massacre in battle; her spirit and directness impressed him.
At Royal Harbor
King Joffrey ( Jack Gleeson ) is becoming more and more cruel: learning about Robb's last victory, he publicly humiliates his sister, Sansa ( Sophie Turner ), and orders Syrah Merina Trantu (Ian Beatty) to beat her at all. Tyrion ( Peter Dinklage ) and Bronn ( Jerome Flynn ) intervene in time and take the girl away. Tyrion admires her strength of mind. Bronn suggests that sex can reassure the little king, and Tyrion sends prostitutes Ros ( Esme Bianco ) and Daisy (Macy Dee) to Joffrey's chambers. However, Joffrey forces Ros to beat Daisy to deliver a “message” to Tyrion. Ser Lansel Lannister ( Eugene Simon ) visits Tyrion and informs him that Queen Cersei orders the release of the great master Pitzel. Tyrion tells Lancel that he knows about his love affair with Cersei, but he will hide the truth from Joffrey in exchange for Lancel spying on Cersei for him.
At Harrenhol
The captured Arya ( Macy Williams ), Jendry ( Joe Dempsey ) and Patty (Ben Hawkey) were taken to the ruined Harrenhol castle, which is currently captured by the Lannister army. In the castle, there is a garrison under the command of Grigor "Mountains" Kligan ( Ian White ), who brutally tortures and kills captives every day, trying to find out something about a group called the Brotherhood. One day, Jendry was next in line for torture, but the torture was stopped by the arriving Lord Tywin Lannister ( Charles Dance ), who stops the cruelty and orders the prisoners to be sent to work. When Pollyver (Andy Keller) catches Arya, who has stared at his sword, Igloo, he threatens her. However, Tywin spares her, who recognizes that she is a girl and makes her his cupcake.
Beyond Quarter
Daenerys ( Emilia Clark ) learns from Covarro ( Steven Cole ), who returned from intelligence, that they are ready to receive the “Mother of Dragons” in the nearby town of Quart. Sir Jorah Mormont ( Ian Glen ) warns that the Quart is surrounded by the fierce Bone Garden desert. When the "horde" Daenerys arrives at the Quart, they are met by Thirteen, the rulers of the city. One of them, a spice merchant ( Nicholas Blaine ), speaks on behalf of the group and bargains with her to see Daenerys dragons, in exchange for food and relaxation inside Quart. Daenerys asks to take care of her people first before she reveals her dragons, and Thirteen decide to throw them in the Bone Garden. Daenerys vows to take revenge on Quart, and one of the Thirteen, Ksaro Ksoan Daxos ( Nonso Anosi ), vouchs for the behavior of Daenerys people by swearing blood, after which they are allowed to enter the city.
In Stormlands
Petyr “Pinky” Baelish ( Aidan Gyllen ) arrives in Stormlands and meets with Renly Baratheon ( Gethin Anthony ) to discuss the siege of the Royal Harbor. Meeting Margery Tyrell ( Natalie Dormer ), he asks questions about her marriage and Renly’s relationship with her brother Loras ( Finn Jones ), but the potential queen refuses to answer. He then meets with Katylyn ( Michelle Fairley ), who is furious at the sight of him. The little finger informs her of the Lannisters' desire to exchange Sansa and Arya for Sir Jaime, as a gesture of goodwill, he brings her the remains of Ned. Renly and Katyline later meet with Stannis ( Stephen Dillane ) and Melisandra ( Caris van Houten ). Stannis offers Renly to enter his army in exchange for heir status, but Renly refuses, because he has a larger army and the support of many noble families. Before leaving, Stannis tells Renley that before dawn he will either change his mind or be destroyed.
At night, Stannis orders Davos ( Liam Cunningham ) to take Melisander to the beach and make sure that no one has seen them. Arriving ashore, Davos witnesses how Melisandra, being in the late stages of pregnancy, gives birth to a terrifying dark figure that disappears in a cloud of smoke.
Production
Script
The Bone Garden was the first of two episodes that Vanessa Taylor wrote for the script, added to this season's screenwriters. The script was based on chapters 27, 30, 32, 33, and 43 (Arya VI, Tyrion VII, Katylin III, Sansa III, and Davos II) from George R. R. Martin ’s novel “ The Battle of the Kings ”. [one]
The episode has many significant deviations from the source material. One of the most significant is the character of Talis, which is based on the Jane Westerling from the novel, but has different background and motives (in the books she is the daughter of the insignificant vassal lannister Lannister, while in the show she is a foreign lady from the Free City of Volantis). [1] The producers acknowledge that Robb's storyline is "one of those places where romance and shows diverge quite sharply." The talent and charm that Richard Madden demonstrated during the first season convinced him to expand his presence and portray his love story on the screen. [2]
Other deviations include Littlefinger’s early arrival in the Tyrell’s army and his interaction with Caitilin (in books he arrives much later after she left), the merger of two shadow creatures of Melisandra into one (the Siege of the Storm Reach and the character of Courtney Penrose dropped out of the show) and disclosure Tyva is the gender of Arya, as well as the fact that he makes her his own butler (in the books, Arya renounces his boyhood and is assigned to work in the kitchens; later she became a butler with Ruse Bolton, and not Tyvin). In addition, several scenes were specifically created for the show, including a scene with Joffrey's sadistic inclinations and prostitutes, and a scene in which Daenerys is taken at the gate to the Quart. [one]
Casting
This episode highlights the first appearance of the recurring actress Una Chaplin . When casting was announced in August 2011, HBO only indicated a character named “Jane”, refusing to give any last name. Since there were several characters with the same name in the books, this led to speculation about who Chaplin would play. [3] Ultimately, it was announced that the character was based on Jane Westerling, and by the time she started filming, she was renamed Talisu. [4] Chaplin read all the original books and was already a big fan of the show before coming to the casting. [five]
A new locale, the Quart was also introduced, also with three roles among the Thirteen, the governing bodies of the city:
- Xaro Xoan Daxos was played by Nonso Anosi . In the books, Ksaro is a native of Quart, and white, but in the series, Ksaro is an immigrant from the Summer Islands and black. Many other features of the original character, such as homosexuality and constant sobbing, have been removed from adaptation. Anosi said he auditioned for another role in the first season, and HBO wanted to accept him, but the schedule problem prevented him from attending. [6]
- The Spice King was played by Nicholas Blaine. The character was specially created for the show, but it embodies the Ancient Spice Guild from the book, one of the ancient merchant groups that contacts Ksaro Xoan Daxos. [7]
- Pirate Prey was played by Ian Hanmore , who had no cues in this episode, but was present at the gate reception. In the book, the sorcerer was not one of the Thirteen.
Charles Dance returns as Tywin Lannister, he was added to the main cast and included in the opening credits (he was a recurring guest star for the first season). The episode highlights the first appearance of Ian White in the role of Grigor Cleagan. Earlier, Kligan was played by Conan Stevens in season one. White played White Walker, shown in the first episode , as well as in the episode of the second season, " Night Lands ". Although White did not return in the role of Grigor in the fourth season (the role was given to the Icelandic heavyweight Haftor Julius Björnsson ), he played the giant Woon Woon in the episodes of the fifth season “The Cruel House ” and “ Dragon Dance ”. [eight]
Location
The Bone Garden production continued to use The Paint Hall's Belfast studios for indoor filming and the constructed filming locations in Larribean Bay for scenes in Renley's camp.
The episode also presented many outdoor shootings: the gate to the Quart was built in the Dubac quarry near Dubrovnik , on the cliffs above the Adriatic Sea; [9] The scenes in the caves below Renly's camp were filmed in the caves of Cachendan, in the county of Antrim ; [10] and the filming locations, representing Harrenhall’s large ruined castle, were built near Banbridge , County Down . [eleven]
Setting and requisite
The final scene in which Melisandra gives birth to a shadow creature was shot at night, in a real cave and in cold weather. The scene was very unpretentious for actress Karis van Houten, who had to be naked and scream loudly during childbirth. For this reason, the scene could not be rehearsed before filming. To make Van Houten look pregnant, makeup artist Conor O'Sullivan prepared a fake belly that was pneumatically controlled to simulate childbirth. The creature was added using CGI. [12]
Macy Dee, a porn actress who played the role of the mutilated prostitute Daisy, spoke about her experiences on Game of Thrones on her blog. [13] She wrote that her character was nameless during the filming of her first scene, but ended up giving her character a name later. Joffrey ordered the mockery of her throughout the day, using a real leather belt and soft props to show how Ros flogged Daisy. [14]
Reaction
Ratings
The number of viewers during the first broadcast remained unchanged for the fourth week in a row, reaching 3.7 million viewers. [15]
Critical Reaction
Kostya Sad received mostly positive opinions from many commentators. On the Rotten Tomatoes website, the episode received a 100% rating based on 14 positive reviews. [16] Matt Fowler of IGN ranked 9 out of 10, calling him “a fierce attitude overwhelmed by misery, torture and a complete 'wtf' ending fueled by black magic.” [17] David Sims and Todd Vanderveriff, two reviewers from The AV Club both set the episode B +. [18] [19] TV fan Matt Ricenthal also considered him the best of the season, but was worried about the ending and how the magic would be seen on the show. [20]
Rewards
The episode won an Emmy Award for Best Scenery in the series. [21]
