The hieroglyphic staircase is the staircase of the temple number 26 in the Mayan city of Kopan [1] , located on the western side of the temple [2] .

The staircase was laid in the reign of King Wakashlahun-Ubah-Kavil , was significantly rebuilt during the reign of Kak-Yipyah-Chan-Kavil [1] .
Description
The staircase is the longest inscription known to science on Mayan monuments; its length reached 21 meters [1] . The width of the stairs is 10 meters [2] . The architectural features of the stairs are characteristic of Tikal and Peten [3] . 2200 hieroglyphs are applied to it. The text on the stairs tells the story of Copan [1] .
Of the 63 steps of the staircase, the lower 15 have survived to this day. The upper steps have been restored by archaeologists of the Carnegie Museum , but the text on them was not reconstructed [1] .
